Default British Foreign Legion

Hi all.
A number of months ago I found a British Foreign Legion shako plate (image on the left) in a remote area of South Africa at an old post site (±1840-1890). Now a second version of what also looks like a shako plate has been found in the same area. Are both the examples shako plates, or was the second a badge that was worn somewhere else on the uniform, or on a different headgear. Any information in connection with the British Foreign Legion will be appreciated as there is not much on the internet. I have managed to obtain some information on the British German Legion, as many members were sent to South Africa after the Crimean war.
