BC,
First four are South African: 1. Supposed to be a South African Airforce Air Gunner brevet c.1935/36 and relatively rare, but I have seen so many of these coming to the market in past 5 years (including bronze ones) so suspect someone has been producing these for the market. Original ones were in gilding metal. 2. First Machine Gun Squadron. Also a circa mid 1930's badge and relatively rare. Very short lived unit. 3. Machine gun section for South African Horse in East Africa c.WWI - also a relatively rare item 4. Machine gunners arm qualification badge - South African WWI East Africa and again rare. The winged wheel with Crossed machine guns I have not seen before but suspect this may be a WWI American item or maybe Belgium (so not African) The last three I cannot shed more light on except to say probably all WWI and East African |

gives me something to work on any ballpark dollar value you would think reasonable? i agree with your South African Airforce Air Gunner brevet comment. have seen these come up regularly. wasn't aware they should be gilding metal cheers BC |

Difficult to say when it comes to a value. I see items marketed for high prices but the items that actually sell goes for between US$20 to US$30 each for the SA items

"1 LAMB" - a shoulder title of 1st Light Armoured Motor Battery, which operated in East Africa during WWI?

Interesting comment about the SAAF gunner badge. There have been quite a few on the market recently but I have a bronze one in my collection which I have had for about 25 years. As far as I can remember, mine is die-cast, not die-stamped though. Unfortunately I am away and don't have a photo of the rear.
Will check when I get home. Cheers, Alex |
