Julian,
Dennis R. curator of the Lpool Scottish Museum told me that the one piece striking was a WW1 economy measure. This would make sense as the single strike is much more common than the 2 piece.If the 2 piece badge was worn by NCOs as I think is suggested in some books,the battalion would have consisted of mainly NCOs with a few privates.
