Royal Horse Artillery KC cap badges
Hello,
I'm looking for information about the kind of metals which were used to make RHA cap badges of the 3rd RHA, 4th RHA and 5th RHA during inter war period and WWII. I know that the RHA cap badges were not officialy adopted until 1948 but it does exist pictures which prove they were already worn by the RHA regiments attached to the 7th AD, 11th AD and 2nd Army in Normandy and during the NW Europe campaign 1944-45. In a document I've compiled by my self some years ago about the badges worn by RA regiments during the NWE campaign I noted that 3rd and 5th RHA regiments wore a white metal cap badge and in reverse the 4th RHA regiment wore a gilding metal cap badge. About the 13rd RHA (HAC) I have not got information yet about the metal in use for the cap badge at this time but the RHA pattern cap badge was also used by the unit in 1944-45. It seems Interresting to note that many of the cap badges for the RHA regiments were "commercial patterns" with the maker marks moulded on the back of the cap badges made by Firmin London either on white or gilding metal patterns. I also have one gilding metal pattern which has Gaunt London striked on the slider (maybe because they were ordered privatly by the regiments and paid on regimental funds). I can't remember where I found out this information at the time I compiled my notes. Does someone is able to help me or giving me a good source of explanation please? J-F

For one week this post has stayed totaly mute... Do I have posted an oddity? Nobody in this forum has knowledge about RHA cap badges??? Strange... British collectors in this forum are used to be more prolific about their own army knowledge

All I can add is that this example - now in my collection, was worn by the man in the image in 12 RHA. The backing is not original - unfortunately. Mike

RHA Badges
Hi J-F
I sense your frustration. I know next to nothing about the badges of the RHA but there have been a few threads about this badge on the Forum in the past. Equally I know very little about how you begin to find these threads other than go to "Search" and put in "RHA Badges" and cross your fingers. I hope this works for you. Best wishes Gordon |
