Here are the Springbucks that are represented on the badge, these two roamed the garden of a friend of ours in Cape Town....I have just entrenched the image most people have of Africa Sadly one of them was killed by the owners dogs after he had head butted them once too often..very sad, my mate had reared them from small!

Hi All,

we've seen the nice selection of 4th SAI; does anyone have for the other 3 Regiments? I'm not sure where 1st SAI were drawn from but 2nd SAI were Natal & OFS and 3rd SAI, Transvaal regiments which I think, included Rhodesia.

Hello Iain,
Many members of the first regiment came from the Cape.
Officers SD cap and collars of the 1st SAI.

Hi Frank,

I thought that may have been the case but I wasn't sure.

Nice badges, thanks for sharing; it's good to see the real thing.

regards, Iain

Hi Alex,

I dont know how long the Boks will keep that name. It seems the SA Infantry now use the shield and spears and no longer the Bok as the symbol

regards, Iain

Sounds like the only Springbok's that are endangered are those used as symbols!

Hi,
I mentioned this Tiptaft general service title in an earlier post and finally got round to post it.

Frank...no shortage of Springboks at all (including rugby players) except the white albino one's, they are not allowed to be shot by law. They are mostly culled/hunted and their meat mainly turned into tons of Biltong (cured (spiced) dried meat) for those who don't know. South Africans devour huge amounts of the stuff. American's I believe call it jerky or something like that.

Yes, the old "Imperial" badges are on the "hit list" sadly, and will in time all disappear no doubt to be replaced with Africanised emblems and names to boot. I do believe within a decade all our old famous SA Regiments will no longer exist as we know them today. They are in the twilight of their long and proud histories. It is on the cards that no white male may be an OC once the present ones retire! What will happen to the officers messes and Sgt messes displays of old militaria and unit silver, I shudder to contemplate. I will not elaborate any further as my blood will boil.
Regards
Brian

Oh now that is nice to see, there were just so many companies making the brigades badges, sometimes in quite small numbers too, I think we should bare in mind that these badges are just like Kitchener's service battalions, if these were units of the British Army, they would be all worth rather more!

Default 3rd SAI

My favourite regiment, they had a desperate fight at Delville, one of the first medal groups I bought was to a very young man in this regt, taken POW at Delville, his attestation papers show him as an 18 year old, however, his medical papers show him as just 15 years old on enlistment, he had been a shop assistant from Grahamstown.
