1 Port Construction and Repair Group. Presumably Royal Engineers, I can't find any evidence of Australia having a unit of that particular .description

Thanks Keith
Very interesting. I thought it was Australian. Will try list it in the British unknown and see how it goes. Thanks for the reply. BC |

Royal Australian Engineers. Army Reserve unit sponsored by the Maritime Sevices Board. Disbanded and absorbed by 19 CE Works, then parts of it became the Littoral and Riverine sqn. Did a lot of work with depth soundings for amphibious assaults. Was posted to them for a couple of months just before they were disbanded.

You could be right Keith. I first worked with them in the mid 70's and they were 1 PC&R Group then. I did their last 2 exercises, one at Cowley Beach/Townsville and the other at Yamba and they disbanded shortly after that, 1991/2? Some of their members are in our association, I will ask their old Chief Clerk for the info and let you both know. regards Glenn

According to the old CC the unit was formed as the 45th Port Maintenance Sqn 26th June 1955 and disbanded 30th June 1995, so not sure who is right about the disbandment date. Regards Glenn

You could be right Mike, I was with them when they were disbanded, but don't remember the date. Very confusing time as my old unit 26 Div ESS had just been disbanded and I got a welcome aboard phone call from 19 CE Works. A couple of weeks later I got a welcome aboard call from 23 Field Regt RAA and while I was supporting another unit I got a "what are doing with that unit" call from 5 CER. When the smoke cleared I ended up with 21 Construction Regiment, a unit I was sacked from 3 years previously.

It's a neglected subject the Supplementary Reserve aspect of the RAE.
