Death of the last Gurkha VC

I know members of the forum will be saddened to hear of the passing of Hon Capt Ram Bahadur Limbu 10GR at the age of 87. He passed away peacefully in hospital in Kathmandu - he was the last surviving Gurkha Victoria Cross recipient.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think I may have met this man about 20 years ago.

At the time I was trekking in The Himalayas, one of our guides/sherpa, was an ex Ghurka soldier.

We were in a very small village high up beneath Annapurna, when an obviously Military man was seen walking towards us.

Long story short, the ex Ghurka guide suddenly became very deferential to the man, a few phrases were passed between them and the man went on his way.

At some stage I did ask the guide who the man was and he told me Captain Limbu, (at least it sounded like that), famous man.

I have met a few ex Ghurka soldiers over the years, both in Nepal and elsewhere, visited the museum in Pokhara and what, if I remember correctly is the Recruitment/training centre in Kathmandu.

Fabulous people, wonderful soldiers and an absolute Honour to meet and speak to them.

Sad news indeed. I had the privilege of meeting him in 1974 before he was commissioned. He was CQMS at the time and based in the Sgt's mess at Pergamos camp in Cyprus during the Turkish invasion. My SSM and myself came to attention and saluted him one morning, to which he replied 'thank you sergeant major'. Not a legal requirement, but a longstanding tradition that all ranks salute a VC recipient.
