Default Beret colours

Does anyone have pictures of the exact shade of British Ranger berets? on Forces net features the berets often seem to be a light grey sand shade but there are a number of photos where the beret is closer to the RAF beret, dark grey but with a hint of blue.

If anyone has a similar picture with the correct shade of Emerald Grey used by the SRR I'd appreciate it

Many thanks

I am told it is "gun-metal grey".

Yes, I saw that but there seem to be a vast array of colours in that description.

The right hand picture shows Brigadier AGC (Gus) Fair the first commander of the Army Special Operations Brigade. He was commissioned into the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and I suspect it is their 'grey' beret he is wearing, possibly the inspiration of the Rangers beret?

Scots DG beret is a lighter grey than this beret, the Ranger beret is closer in colour to that of the QARANC.

So it looks like fifty shades of grey! Well at least three - SCOTS DG, RANGERS, QARANC

Consider too the timeline over the set up of the Ranger Regiment. Concept - approval - 'dress' distinctions suggested and approved by the Army Dress Committee - contracts out to beret manufacturers - sealed pattern - issue and badging to the battalions etc.

The MOD illustration of the beret shown in my post 4 above was possibly a 'mock up' as the actual berets had not been manufactured when the announcement was made?

Also colour perceptions vary, particularly when viewing images on the screens of different devices!

Here's the two side by side.

Definite blue tinge to the Ranger beret (which judging by whats left of the blue 'silk' lining) is a private purchase job butchered Para-Reg style so the badge is over the left ear looking like a wonky TOS. The SRR is an Afghan-era issued one.

Thanks, so the initial MOD publicity photo wasn't correct beret and it is like the one where 4 Rifles are changing there berets. Except that Forces news video taken in the USA where the Rangers were working with the US Army Special Forces, the Ruperts beret was like the sandy coloured one, too different to simply be fading.

I've only ever seen the SRR beret once and that was at Lydd, being worn by R' Sigs lads from 18 Regt.

People would know that beret colours change even in natural sunlight. It depends on what angle you're taking the photo, how close, whether you're in partially shaded area or direct sunlight, time of day, etc.
