Found this online :

6 German WWI Pilots and Observers Badges

More detail on badges , described as "Imperial German Army Air Service Beobachterabzeichen (Observer Badge)" can be found on this page :

http://www.kaisersbunker.com/flieger/f31.htm

Also found a book "Germany - Service instruction in the Air Force - 1937" which shows the same emblem.

Found another reference which may be appropriate to the patch , the symbol was used by the various German Army Groups in WW2 .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_Group_A

Described as :
"The checkerboard flag for commanding generals of army groups (Heeresgruppen) was also used by commanding generals of armies (Armeen)."

Command Flag for the Commander of an Army Group or an Army
Kommandoflagge für den Oberbefehlshaber einer Heeresgruppe oder einer Armee
