Can't help with the numbers but did find an interesting 4 page document (22/05/1918) about their design/patent including original drawings.

Improvements in and connected with Stripes of the kind Worn by Wounded Soldiers.


Edit : Found a photo on GWF of a wound stripe stamped No.4 PAT 115896 which is the number on the above patent document.

Ah wonderful, many thanks both. Something to keep an eye out for then.
Have moved on to Corps badges and waylaid reading about Signals and pigeons, it's one of those meandering days.

A few more Wound Stripes.

3 with Backing Plate, 2 with backing Plate, 2,3 and No 4 Patent. The latter pair clipped by their original owner. 3 Lugged version with Prov Patent to the reverse and a WS converted into a tie pine by the Original owner Pte (Later WO2) FC Russell 10th Bn RF(Stockbrokers) He also owned the three lugged variant.

Nice to see those, definitely a few more to keep an eye out for then, once antique fairs etc start again.
It's been a lot of fun sorting out my badges, finding things I'd forgotten about and a lot of items bought from lovely forum members. It's reignited my interest in sand cast items, I have a few more then I'd remembered, and some really nice pieces, I may have to keep an eye out for a few more.

I'm saving the best til last(Well I say last I then have masses of RAF to do)I have 3 trays of fusiliers, of which you are getting none.
Odd collars are irritating me I have a Fife & Forfar that needs it's opposite number, and I have odd Berkshire Regiments that need the correct opposite.
Badgewise I want a nicer Middlesex Territorial 7th, 8th, 9th and a few more Middlesex bits. Its all want, want, want...

No they are not missing in action I just need to buy the matching collars. The curtains are not a constant source of missing badges.
*in case anyone was wondering I lost a lovely officers Middlesex collar, pulled a chair apart looking for it and then it turned up in a curtain, well was discovered when the curtains were drawn and it shot out landing behind the TV*

I would suggest that "No 1" was the original Russia braid version. There was also an "un-tarnishable" version, by Firmin, and a sew on un-numbered version.

From a an article by Don McLean in Medal News, May 2005May 2005 -

This is about a booklet entitled "Soldiers' & Sailors' Rights", published 1917 & which has a section:

Wound Badge: In July 1916, the authorties approved of the wearing of badges for officers and men who have been wounded since August 4, 1914. The badges are strips of gold Russian braid, two inches in length, sewn perpendicular near the bottom of the left sleeve of the jacket and each strip will mark each occasion on which an officer or man has been wounded . These badges can be obtained from the Army Ordnance Department.

Badges for Wounded Naval Men: The much appreciated decision of the Army Council to award gold stripes to wounded soldiers naturally called for similar recognition of the services in the Navy. The Admiralty lost no time in responding to the wish of the Navy, Dr Macnamara announcing in parliament on July 17, 1916, that it was proposed to issue distinctive badges for invalided and wounded naval men.
