The corrosion which is almost rust like would indicate a white metal base which has lost its protective nickel plating.

That’s okay Jack,
Various badges to different Regts turn up now and again with the same type of ‘Patina’ to the white metal, the cause could be environmental (buried for example) or inadvertently removing nickel plate by other means, once the nickel is removed the base alloys of tin, zinc, lead etc don’t weather to well and will corrode

Paul,

I’m familiar with what you mean but I’m sure this one is actually brass.

I’m 31 and have studied and collected these badges since I was 11. I’ve handled enough to know the difference between patina and what a badge is made from.

Jack

I have one of these brass para badges which appears the same as the original posted, that is exactly down to the strange detail on the loops. I also have a badge that has been plated that is apart from the plating identical.

I have enough engineering experience to know brass that has not been plated.

Value? - Bloody ridiculous at £150.

Jim, you obviously have no idea about the prices of Airborne or special forces insignia

Hello
It’s good to see a debate around this badge. I have looked even closer and can see that on the front of the badge occasionally you can see exposed parts of the surface underneath the dull patina. I am please to say that it is clearly brass and as bright as the back and no nickel to be seen.

I have compared with the 4 nickel plated brass ones with silver coloured/ nickel lugs that have wear through to the brass on fight points and they are similar in colour but a slightly higher sheen to the brass showing through.

Please see photos, the comparison one is with 6 badges front and back, the difference is striking between all, brass and the nickle plated ones, can you spot the only white metal one (its s slightly yellowed one under the 100% brass one .

Regards
Paul
