Default African Items Opinions Welcome

These were collected as with my other commonwealth items, as part of larger lots. I have some reference material for South Africa and Rhodesia, again came in a box of books and from that have some doubts, wrong metals ect.

Hi Neil,
Some nice SA badges there but also three copies/fakes that I can see that were produced in the 1970's long after these units were defunct.

The copies are:
Regiment President Steyn - should not have a slider (original ones had lugs)
SAMC Double scroll WWI period - Also should not have a slider (original ones only had lugs)
DEOVR white metal - No cutout around thistle is sign of a copy.

Regards
Steven

Hi Neil

Yes some very nice badges. Don't be put off by the cast ones, SA Forces used many of these. Looks like some were mounted on a board at some time, certain materials can blemish badges.

Is the DEOVR white metal or bronze, looks like bronze?

Brian

Brian
The DEOVR is white metal. Quite a few of the other wm badges also appear bronze, but I think this is oxidation from been on an exposed board for a long time.

Thank you Steven and Brian
I have a copy of The Military Badges of South Africa & Rhodesia by Colin R Owen that really is my only knowledge on the subject.
The DEOVR is made of G/M and unvoided so was one that I had marked as being wrong also the school cadet badge (springbok within a circlet) should be W/M but is G/M it can be difficult to see in a photo. The cast SATC (sept 41-march 43) I am not so concerned about it looks like a lot of bazaar made middle eastern / north african badges with flat copper loops

Neil,
The ZARP badge is spot on in g/m and was worn on a white colonial pattern helmet.

The School Cadets in g/m is actually a WWI SA Expeditionary force cap badge. This was the same badge as used by school cadets, except the cadets version was in white metal.

So both good.

Steven
