A few years back I spoke to Craig Fourie, co-author of LRDG RHODESIA and he told me that the cast badge in their book was owned by one of the veterans they interviewed. This was later confirmed to me by Jonathan Pittaway a couple of years back. See att. photo.

There is another blackened one in the book L’ODYSSEE DE LA COLONNE LECLERC and is from the collection of Didier Corbonnis. This one is also reputed to come from a veteran who served in Africa.

Is this your evidence that some of the badges were blackened or are you saying that the badge listed and sold on ebay by Steve Wende is genuine?

I have other examples of blackened and yes Steve’s badge is genuine.

There are different types of provenance. This is secondary and not what I would want personally

Default LRDG

The attached is a photo of the badges made for the LRDG Association. There are a pair of them but I have only shown an image the rear of one of them.
These were made sometime pre 1975

Hopefully this will help a bit with identification of these badges. I do have a few in my collection that came from veterans which I have shown on the forum before.

Cheers

Arnhem

That's interesting because I have information that two people who collect LRDG both believe it is a fake.
As another forum member said why would you sell it for US$806 less than they paid for it? Why didn't Steve put it on this forum when he would have known there are a number of LRDG collectors here? Why did only one person bid on it on ebay if it was genuine?

Again, I am sceptical that the Vet obtained LRDG badge in the book is cast, and unfortunate we can not view the back of the badge to see if die-stamped.

The last time I saw one of these early LRDG die-stamped variations come on to the market was over four years ago. It belonged to fellow forum member KiwiRic who is someone I respect as an authority on LRP and LRDG badges.
Oddly enough there were some doubters back then that slammed it as a fake, but none could produce credible evidence as to why it was a fake, it simply was because they said so.

I do have some better photos of this badge, but these are the ones from KiwiRics auction.

PS look forward to some pictures of the back of the DLO badge.

Please share the information that proves the badge in question is a fake, or better still invite these people to the discussion

Unfortunately I have only found the one photo of the late Shaun Aumua's early variation die-stamped LRDG badge and its pretty bad.
I will try and get in contact with SteveC who is the new owner of Shaun's badge, and see if he can post some better pictures.

Steve I'm pretty certain the middle and right badges are both die cast, but the left I'm not sure of, could you share a picture of the back, or send it PM.

I don't think they'd be interested in this discussion. More will be revealed in time.
I'm still waiting for answers to these questions.
1) As another forum member said why would you sell it for US$806 less than they paid for it?
2) Why didn't Steve put it on this forum when he would have known there are a number of LRDG collectors here?
3)Why did only one person bid on it on ebay if it was genuine?

I'm listening to both sides of the fence, so its up to you to make the difference.
Meanwhile I try and hunt down some pictures of this super rare variation of LRDG badge, so people can compare with the one that is at the start of this thread and make their own decisions.

As for your questions, people sometimes sell things cheaper than what they paid for them, that is a fact of life and a sign of the times.
Oddly KiwiRic also never gave a heads up on his auction, personally I find it totally understandable, I myself would have sold it on Trade-me.
Possibly the best answer to your last question might be this thread. Lots of people quickly condemned it as a typical Marsh fake.

Thanks for the photos Steve. Is it my eyesight or are there significant differences between this badge and the one Steve Wende sold on ebay? I'd suggest there are significant differences both front and back.
