Sydney University Company badge - possibly 1900 to 1912
Sydney University Company hat badge - possibly worn 1900 to 1912.
I'm not 100% sure if it's a hat badge. Does anyone have any info about it? Enjoy! Mick

G'day Mick, nice badge.
The one on Digger History to the Sydney University Regiment has the same features, Lion, Southern Cross, Open Book, etc. |

Thanks mate - I have asked the badge's owner if he has any more info about it.
Also, be careful with info from the Digger History website - its full of errors and omissions. Mick

Hi
Seen this before. Have something similar. Will dig it out. Mine is pin back. If it's pin back and given the design I would say association type badge. Doesn't look like a hat badge in any way. Pic of the back would be good Bc |

From what the owner of the badge has been able to find so far is that it was worn as a civilian lapel badge by a group of Sydney University volunteers who offered themselves as volunteers when the war was going badly, possibly when the second Conscription referendum was held in 1917.
The deal was that they would actually go to war when they finished their studies, but the war finished before they could. The badge ranks with the others were issued to stop the wearer being given a white feather on the train, but it was not a Commonwealth government issue. Mick

If you are ever in Syd you should drop past Syd University Regt on King St just up from broadway. Just inside the orderly room to the left of the counter there is a very nice under glass display of the regiments insignia. I am sure the ARA staff on duty would not mind letting someone with interest take a look and maybe a photograph. |
