Great photos. Have you a date for the second picture on post 46. There are a lot of four pocket tunics but in amongst them are three or four two pocket tunic.

Thanks for posting them.
Regards
Irv

Hi Irv

I'm afraid that is one of the undated images. I've always assumed it to be one of the later images as all the recruits are now wearing peaked caps. Some of the pictures shown are taken of the recruits once they were serving in the Fleet and THEY are dated. The earliest of these seem to date from 1925, so I would guess that the undated squad image dates from 1924-25. But that is only a guess!

Cheers Pete,
I would say early 20’s as the Sgt in the front row is still wearing a Brodrick cap. Your guess of 24/25 doesn’t sound that far out. My guess would be 23/24. I’m sure that that Sgt, wanting to be his smartest and up to date, would have swapped his cap to one with a peak. Wearing it 23/24 is close enough to the change over date to make it exceptable. Thanks again for posting the pictures.

Regards
Irv

One of my favourite photos. The back reads ‘Taken 27th January 1923, George age 17 and a fortnight’.

A great image.

In these pictures they all look so young - and I love the way that in so many pictures they are ALL puffing away on cigarettes!

Most of mine have little more information than the name of the person in the photo and, sometimes, the name of a ship they were serving on. But it's fantastic that the images still survive. There is so much information in the pictures that just isn't found in the documents and archives.
