Default Glasgow Highlanders

I've purchased these recently and would like to check the authenticity of them please.

First up are two Glasgow Highlanders badges.

The next are a couple of 9th Battalion HLI.

The second one looks much larger than the first (it's the same size as a standard Balck Watch badge) and seems to lack details on the front of the badge. I'm presuming that this might be a fake?

The last photo shows them side by side.

The last two badges, I believe to be restrikes and, to be fair, were sold with this potential being the case.

They were, though, both as cheap as chips so there's no material loss associated with them if they are.

The Highland Cyclists badge is coated with a brown coating that's starting to wear away and the 4th Perthshire has something odd going on around the bottom of the scroll.

Thanks Alan. That’s really helpful and makes sense as it certainly doesn’t seem to be a badge with significant age to it.

The two Glesga Highlanders are identical from the same die. I think they are OK.
The 9th Bn. with the large fronds is similar to the Black Watch issue type, with rather poor detail. Not familiar with it, so I am not sure.

I'm afraid I would agree with your assessment of the Highland Cyclist badge.

You may have noticed it has the spelling Lacesset versus Lacessit on all your HLI badges. If you are looking for a genuine replacement for it, both spellings can be found. Here are a couple of mine, both different strikes and spellings, as examples.

(Forum wisdom is that ET spellings in general are not found post 1926, whereas IT spellings can be found both before and after).

Regarding your second badge with the very prominent die flaw, I do remember Forum Member, Malcolm Davey posting a photo of the badge with the same die flaw many, many years ago. I'm sure the 9th Bn thread can still be found. So probably genuine, but perhaps not an ideal representative example.

Thank you Mark and CB.

That's really helpful information.

It's also good being able to see photos of a genuine TF Cyclists badge as that has given me plenty of camparison points against the restrike.

I've managed to track down the thread with Malcom Davey's photo and it was most useful. Not only does it show the second 9th Bn. badge but there are also two badges with very similar perculiarities to my first 9th Bn badge shown in the thread.

It certainly helps give me more a lot more confidence in the 9th Bn. badges.
