The contents of Army Lists
Going through some of my copies of Army Lists for various dates looking for some particular information I was reminded that sometimes some quite surprising information is included which can be of great assistance with research.
A few examples are: Army List June 1894 contains: List of Volunteer Battalions- shown separate to and at the end of the Regular Regiments/Battalions Military Recipients of the Victoria Cross Cadet Battalions with details of officers ( only 5 shown 1st and 2nd West Surrey, Kings Liverpool, East Surrey and Manchester) Details of Volunteer Infantry Brigades December 1908 Army List contains : Officers of the T.F. Battalions with separate mention of those officers of the Volunteer Force not yet gazetted to the T.F. Details of both the Junior and Senior Divisions of the OTC. Details of India Army units including Cavalry. List of Bandmasters ( Regular Army ) and Warrant Officers. You tend to forget that Army Lists used to contain much more than just the Officers in each regiment but sadly that seems ,with the passing of time, just what they have become. P.B.

They are great sources of information Peter, I must agree after using the Australian editions constantly. Even the Gradation Lists can yield a surprising amount of information regarding unit succession of titles, etc.
Sadly they are no longer produced (in this form anyway), and have now just become lists of names and current posting. Keith |
