The flag indicates a British or Colonial Government service.
I do not recall a British merchant steamship company with a roundel in a red (or blue) duster.

Merchant Navy officer's would not be wearing the "Executive curl" on their lace, unless RNR, and then they would be wearing an officer's cap badge.

I'll agree with the officers cap badge bit but there were (and still are) commercial companies that wore the executive curl and not all officers who belong to them were RNR officers.

I'm not 100% certain it's a red ensign , it could be a white.

If it helps, through my knowledge of colour identification on old B&W photographs, I am confident that the flag is a Blue Ensign.

regards

Blue ensign could mean Customs/Excise or Police?

Hmm that throws it wide open, as a lot of the colonial territories had blue ensigns defaced in the fly as did (as Phil says) customs and a whole host of other government marine departments.

Hi Bryan

The plot thickens see ebay item No 380940651432 same group different photo second from the left is wearing army insignia and there is no ensign in the background. They are wearing KC CPO cap badges I would suggest this is a theatrical group and just grabbed what uniforms they could, who and why we will probably never know.

I wonder if one of the actors died and it's his estate being cleared.

The cap badge is SIMILAR to the CPO badge but definately not the same.

These badges are clear enough for someone to ID them hopefully.

Thanks for the 'heads up' & item number David. Well that's interesting is it not?

So here are the two photos for comparison: might be the same groups atho not all of them as in the first photo (the 'mystery' flag in the background)

I agree with Simon, I don't feel this is a theatre group, they look like professional officers to me.

Same cat???

I agree with Simon: these men are genuine sailors and so is their cat.

Default Interesting photo - Naval Officers(?)

I think that the cap badge shown in the photo could be that of the Royal Indian Marine (see image below). This was in existence between 1892 and 1934, which would fit the date of the photograph. In 1934 the RIM became the Royal Indian Navy.

The Blue Ensign in the background would therefore be the Indian Government Service Ensign shown below. The image is taken from the Admiralty Manual of Seamanship Vol. 1.
