Just to say, once you start collecting RN badges, it is a very diverse field, with many thousands of badges, the early badges have gold, red, printed blue on white and embroidered blue on white. that is just one badge.

A very good reference for the early badges (pre 1970s) is "Badges & Insignis of the British Armed Services" Try looking in your local library. The naval section is very comprehensive. A number of you badges are later than this date.

I will have a look at your photographs when I have a little more time, unless someone else answers before then.

A lot of badges hence a lot of writing/typing (long time when you only 2 finger type like me) to describe them. I have attached a link which should take you to BR3 which will give you a good starter for 10 for the currently used badges, you can then narrow down the ones you can't identify.

http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/News-and...book/an39e.pdf

The current convention for stars & crowns on badges is

a. Basic device: on entering a sub-branch.
b. Basic device with star above: on qualifying professionally for Able Rate.
c. Basic device with star above and star below: on qualifying professionally for
Leading Rate.
d. Basic device with crown above: on qualifying professionally for Petty Officer.
e. Chief Petty Officers attain no additional professional qualification and wear the basic device with crown above.

Last picture, top row, 4th badge. This is an arm badge worn by troops in Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force. I believe its worn by all services. A google search should reveal more.

Another book you might want to get is "Rank & Rate. Royal Navy Ratings, WRNS, Royal Marines, QARNNS, Auxiliaries." Volume 2. by E.C. Coleman. Crowood Press, published in April this year. Vol.1, which I bought remaindered, deals with officers. I haven't really got into RN badges yet, apart from some my cousin who was a CPO, gave me, but judging from Vol.1, the second volume might be up your street.

Billy/John

I'll jump in for a panel. Top row right hand side

Top Left - Petty Officer Electronic Warfare
top 2nd left basic device for Electronic Warfare (ordinary seaman)

Propellor device is for a Marine Engineering Mechanic, crown above for Petty Officer, star above and below for Leading Hand (Leading Marine Engineering Mechanic in this instance) and 1 star above is for a Marine Engineering Mechanic (MEM1 - AB level). The M below is for Mechanical and the L is for Electrical

The Warrant officer's cap and beret badges mentioned by John are worn by both WO1 & WO2 but the sleeve badge mentioned is only worn by the WO1

Time for another one, top row middle panel this time

The crossed sea wolf missile and torpedo was the basic device for the Weapons Engineering Mechanic. The O was for Ordnance and the R for Radio. So you have a Petty Officer Weapons Engineering Mechanic (Ordnance), shortened to POWEM(O), a Leading Weapons Engineering Mechanic (Ordnance) or LWEM(O) and a Weapons Engineering Mechanic (Ordnance) or WEM(O), the next 2 badges are POWEM(R) and LWEM(R). In the mid 90s the Operator Mechanic was introduced and they adopted the same basic device but with different letters (they were supposed to replace the WEMs, and various other branches, who were supposed to be phased out but today we still have a small number of WEMs whereas the Operator Mechanic branches have all fallen by the wayside). The AW badge is a Leading Operator Mechanic (Above Water) or LOM(AW), the C badge is the basic device for the Operator Mechanic (Communications) these replaced the Radio Operators, and the CSM badge is a Leading Operator Mechanic (Communications)(Submarines). These gold badges were all worn on the Number 1 uniform, red badges are no longer worn.

Middle row left hand side this time

Basic device for Marine Engineering Mechanic
Leading Seaman (Seaman Specialist)
Basic Device for a Seaman Specialist (not 100% certain but this may be one of the older badges that was worn on the lower sleeve)
Seacat Aimer (worn on lower sleeve)
Going by the size and cut of the next 2 I would say they are CPO Aircraft Handler lapel badges
Leading Aircraft Handler
Air Engineering Mechanic (Electrical) AEM(L)1

Middle row 2nd from left

Air Engineering Mechanic (Mechanical) AEM(M)1
Newer version of Air Engineering Mechanic AEM1 I believe
JSP 768 says this next one is "Uncategorised Basic Rate - Fleet Air Arm"
Next row and a half are the Supply and Secretariat Branch (now known as the Logistics Branch)
Leading Writer
Basic Device for Writer
Caterer (Able Rate)
Stores Accountant (Able Rate)
Basic device for Stores Accountant
Next 2 look like PO Steward sleeve badges but if they are the small version then they would be CPO Steward lapel badges
Basic device for Steward
Next 2 are PO Dental Hygienist but again if they are the small version then they would be CPO Dental Hygienist lapel badges
Basic device for Education and Training Support Branch
Basic device for Medical Assistant
Basic device for Radio Operator (General) RO(G)

Hello

This is the badge for "Seaman Sub-branch New Entrants" worn by Junior Seaman (Operator) ratings upon joining Raleigh. Notice that it is slightly smaller than the previous badge. Probably obsolete now.
