2nd pattern REME dogs and cap buttons
Had these a while and all look good IMO. I assume these were fairly short lived in use?

The Horse and Lightning was adopted as the REME cap badge in 1947 so they had at least 5+ years in use.

Apparently George VI didn't like the first pattern which resulted in the second pattern being designed.

Thanks for the comments guys. I knew they only ran from 47 to 53, but I did not know the reason for dropping the 1st type.

Would still have been worn after 1953 (change of crown) on wastage

As I have mentioned previously elsewhere on the forum, after passing out from the apprentice school at Arborfield in December 1964, my first issue of a REME capbadge was a bi-metal kings crown, so to assume that all kings crown badges ceased to be issued or worn after 1953 would be wrong.

I have gone through the various editions of Maj Edward's book and it is surprising just how late in to the 1960s the King crown badges were in use. While q/c badges do appear in the 1950s editions these are usually for new designs of badges rather than existing patterns.

In the RAOC 'Kings Crown' Bi-Metal Badges were issued till 1966/67 at the Regimental Depot & Junior Leaders, but units were recieving QC Anodised badges well before that! so it was a localised stock balancing with all the remaining KC Badges going to the Depot. It was common around 1960 to get a Brass Badge for the Beret, and a Anodised Badge for the Coloured Service Cap.
In fact one RAOC soldier remembers getting a KC 1918 Patten Plastic Badge in 1956 at Hilsea Depot!! |

No, Its how you read it!
The RAOC 1918 Pattern Badge was in use from 1918 till design was replaced in 1947. The Badge was produced as a wartime measure in Plastic, but that does not change its Pattern type. Same as you can talk about the later 1949 RAOC Pattern in Bi-Metal or Anodised. |
