Default Ralph, 16th Lancers, 20th May 1919

One of those post cards where all the pieces of the jigsaw fall into place. I bought the card because it showed the cap badge, collar badge and shoulder title, and of course because cavalry portraits are relatively scarce. There is a hand written message to the reverse that states, "To Edith, with love from Ralph. 20.5.19(19)". Ralph is also sporting the ribbon of the 1914 Star.

I put the name Ralph into the Ancestry search box and 16th Lancers into the regiment search box, and where this sort of reckless behaviour would normally throw up 30-50 possible candidates for a line regiment, only two came up for the 16th Lancers. Only one had an entitlement to a 1914 Star whereas the other candidate was only entitled to the British War and Victory Medal medals.

So here is L/6906 Cpl Ralph Urban Stanley, 16th Lancers. Born Hertford, 29th June 1886. Died West Croydon February 1985, age 98.

Particularly nice to see the regiments collar badges being worn.

Excellent research and nice when you get a result. I have left a comment in your album as I know the area where he lived in Hertford. Many of the yards like the one that he lived were cleared many years ago, but there are still traces with some still standing.

The 1901 census shows him living at 23 Hertingfordbury Road, Hertford. Interesting to note that his mother was born in Dawley, Shropshire, I bought the card in Oswestry, Shropshire.

It would seem that I was mistaken about him living in Pavitt's Yard. It just shows you that one wrong lead and you can be going completely down the wrong road, so to speak.
