Lt Col Culley
Dear Friends.
Can any member assist me in advising me of any information abut the owner of the TOS on the name of Lt Col Culley I attach a photo of what appears to be his Tam O Shanta. Obviously Royal Corps of Signals and I assume from 32 Scottish Signal Regiment at some time. Any clue would be appreciated. Kind regards Chris Walker www.signalsbadges@gmail.com |

I7TH JULY 1984 ( Majs. to be Lt.-Col 30th June 1984) It also looks like when he left the army he became an author of historical fiction . Quote:

When I first saw the TOS and description, I was a bit skeptical. According to Chris' site, the badge with saltire was not made until 1988, after Lt Col Culley retired. However, it only makes sense that the former commander would be given one of the new badges, especially since he had only retired a few years prior. There is probably a picture out there somewhere with him wearing this TOS during Remembrance Day and regimental gatherings.
With the precedence, I predict both Lt Col Culley's TOS and glengarry will sell for record prices. Much too high for me, I am afraid. Chris, I collect headgear from the Scottish regiments, have used your page on Signals badges many times as a reference, and respect your research skills and expertise. If you are considering this TOS, I am rooting for you! -Reid |

Yes he would.
I would point out that as a Regular officer he would have worn normal RSIGNALS insignia for the majority of his career and would have only worn the 32 Sig Regt beret with tartan flash when he was CO. Until the rules on the wearing of badges were enforced, the RSIGNALS did have the practice of former COs continuing to wear their regimental patches of the regiment that they had commanded for the remainder of their career. This was very much confined to patches and stable belts and not headgear. This all changed in 2015 when the GS TRF was introduced and the GS officers all had to conform. I take the point about Remembrance day but's unusual for retired officers to wear former headgear - even on Remembrance Day as the practice is very much an ex-rankers thing. Without solid provenance all you have is a modern hat that someone has written in with a biro. At least it is a private purchase officer's hat rather then the cheap looking ORs' ones. Where the auction? Last edited by Alan O; 31-07-21 at 04:25 PM. |

Excellent points, Alan.
In the States, we have veterans who wear the headgear of units they belonged to, especially airborne and special operations, during Veteran's Day. I did not know if this was practiced in the UK as well. In pictures, I have seen what appear to be former officers of the Royal Scots in civilian dress wearing glengarries with the officer cap badge, so I thought this might also have been the case. This was especially true during "protests" against the losing of the individual cap badges with the creation of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. I defer to Chris, but the construction of the belt and garter seems a bit crude in comparison with the examples he has on his webpage. I thought this might because it was an early badge or, and I refer again to Chris' page, the Regiment used different manufactures. Bidders will obviously be taking a chance on this |

It's not unheard of and as you say wearing the old hats is particular popular with the Scots infantry but for most regiments it's very much an other-ranks thing. Most former Cavalry officers are far more likely to be wearing a bowler hat on Nov11 rather then their old berets.
I caveat this with the fact that it was the Royal Signals TA and they do love their dressing up..... When the reorganization of the TA put a Liverpool based sqn in 32 Sig Regt, the TA Sqn Commander decided to adopt the Scottish hat and styled them as 'Liverpool Scottish' which really upset people for obvious reasons. Fortunately it only lasted a few years before they moved back to berets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOVQap9GC_U Last edited by Alan O; 31-07-21 at 04:04 PM. |
