Default RND Nelson Cap Badge

Good afternoon all,

This badge was purchased from Bosley's approx 20 years ago but now not so sure about its originality given the straight 'N' ?

Thoughts welcome as always.

Thanks

Mike

The badge is a fake as is the plaque sadly.

Very disappointing of Bosley’s, but as I always say ‘buy the badge, not the seller or their story’.

The genuine Gaunt die badge is significantly different, with a slanted N. A very fine example is shown in Paddy’s album.

What I regard as a genuine variation by different manufacture is illustrated in 1st edition Gaylor, that badge has a straight N but is a different die to the one shown. Notable differences include (but are not limited to) the flag and lines in the sails.

I can remember when they were selling for a couple of pounds, in the Pumphouse, Cardiff.

I wish I had bought them now, they would have made a great display.

Guys, what's the relevance of an upright 'O' rather than a slanted one? I thought this had some significance (but as my ever growing pile of wrong-un's confirm, I know nothing).

A slanted ‘O’ is found on the Genuine Gaunt die and what I believe is a genuine alternative manufacturer variant. But it is also found on two different fake dies.

Upright ‘O’ is only found on what I regard as fakes.

Thanks yet again Luke!
Some traders are actually pushing the upright 'O' as a selling point on ebay, using it to justify higher prices. Jeez, there are some crooks around!

Gary

The 2 versions Luke mentioned are shown below. The left hand one is the Gaunt marked version and the right hand is the unmarked version which a lot of collectors consider to be genuine but made by a different manufacturer.
