Default "R" on back of badge

Hi, what is the meaning of this "R" on the back of the badge. This is the clearest but other Scottish badges also had it. Is it a manufacturer's mark? Mike

"R" = Roden Bros.

To add to Bill's answer, Roden made several badges. They are considered a better quality badge.
