Default 10th Battalion C.E.F. Officers

Good Morning Gentlemen and Ladies.....

I have seen two of these badges listed as Officers badges listed on our most loved auction site......

http://cgi.ebay.com/CANADA-CEF-OFFIC...item20b2956121

I have always thought that these were enlisted badges......

I will attach a photo of what I consider an Officers badge.....

Mike

Hi Mike, I think the use of "officer's" in auction descriptions has far more to do with marketing than with accuarcy. The vendor of the ebay lot is a well known collector / dealer, and he claims the badge is authenticated by a well known, but anonymous CEF authority. It may well be that the 10th had osd pattern badges, but there were also a lot of browning metal badges made for the CEF. There is no doubt that your badges are officers.
Further, the Charlton catalogue of First World War Canadian Infantry Badges lists the ORs' badges as browning copper, by three different makers, Tiptaft Hicks and Gaunt, BUT the officer's badges are described as white metal overlay on browning copper badges, attributed to Hicks.
So, if a collector was looking for a badge undisputeably an officer's pattern, they would be looking for your pattern.

Hi Mike,

I agree - the badge in question looks like a chocolate brown OR's. Certainly not the quality one would associate with an officer's badge. There seems to be some confusion there with British-style OSD badges - but only the colour is similar!

I note the seller has added a statement about how you don't need to question this is an officer's badge because it has been blessed by an expert...

Cheers, Ian.
