Gunner, 1914-1918
A great portrait of an Australian Gunner during World War 1 clearly showing the 'common practice' of wearing the 'GUNNER' trade/proficency badge as a hat/cap badge.

Not a trade/proficiency badge. It was the NCO arm badge for senior NCO ranks above lance-sergeant, and for warrant officers of the Australian Instructional Corps posted for duty with artillery units.
It appears to be the Cannon granted as a distinctive badge to The Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1832. Its use as a hat/cap badge, as a collar badge, and on the shoulder strap by the AIF was prolific during 1914-19 and has even been noted above a set of corporals chevrons in one photo in State Library of South Australia collection.
