Default Black Watch Bonnet

Hi All,

Took a punt on this bonnet, which I believe is officers pattern?, with a swatch of government tartan behind the badge, I removed the badge and it is a 3 part badge, with a nut/bolt holding the badge together. There appears to age and mothing to the bonnet the badge is cast and is uncleaned. I expected to see the badge held together with split pins, so am a little dubious.

Any thoughts?

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve,
Just a Red Hackle was worn on the Tam, it’s an Officers pattern Tam o Shanter.
Paul

You get differing qualities on the badges, personally I’m not a fan of this one.

Paul is right, not worn on the TOS but I would be happy with the badge. There were many variations and I would be more concerned if it was a one-piece badge.
If you don't want it, I will dispose of in in an environmentally friendly manner...
Attached a photo of the back of my one which has the 'S' stamps for silver on it, though not too clear in the photo.
Cheers,
Alex

"British Army Uniforms and Insignia of World War II" by Brian Leigh Davis shows a Black Watch officer (Home Guard?) wearing the badge in his tam though I don't recall if the badge has scrolls or not.

Image added - from page 118 - "An unusual photograph of an officer of the Black Watch, Capt. C. A. Sutherland MBE, wearing the badge normally worn with the Glengarry. The red feather hackle was the badge usually worn with the Balmoral bonnet. The badge has a backing of 42nd Government Tartan. Capt. Sutherland is wearing Battle-Dress with a Sam Browne belt and cross strap which, again, is unusual; July 1941. He may have been a member of a Home Guard unit, which could explain his dress peculiarities".

(It looks the badge worn is the pattern with name scrolls).

As it says Leigh it is unusual and I wonder if he is Home Guard, he is sporting WW1 medal ribbons.
Here is a ww2 ToS in pretty worn condition, this came with a trunk of belongings to a Black Watch Officer with service in India WW2.
