Default WW1 puzzler

A fellow collector sent me this photo asking if I could identify the patch. I've never seen anything like it on a member of the WW1 AIF, so I wonder if anyone on the BBF can help. The man is 2961 Pte Robert Nelson REID, 7th reinf. 57th Bn. Thanks in anticipation!

I should add that I've also checked his online service records and found nothing that suggests any cross-posting to unusual units which might have worn such a patch.

It looks like the standard 57th patch but the fold in the cloth of his sleeve makes it look like its club shaped at the top. If you look at the other arm you can see the thin rectangle of the 57th.

Cheers

Jamie

Interesting -- afraid I can't see it myself, but I guess it might be like one of those optical puzzles, where the harder you look the less you can work it out!
