JTAC wing
Have just traded this one. Not seen one before.
It's a Joint Tactical Air Controller (JTAC) wing. It's embroidered on a standard Army aircraft type wing as worn by all Air Despatch types including AD, QADI and MAD as well as AT for Air Technician (AT), and the experimental HALO wing. Not sure why it's on black, but the chap had seen it on khaki too. Another one for the wants list. Ian H |

There are also mess dress versions and an official patch (black on OD) for field wear that just has 'JTAC' in letterring on it.

JTAC in the British Army was Joint Tactical Air Controller, but, as with a lot of other stuff it went over to the Yank term of Joint Terminal Attack Controller. Follows on from the WO1 appointment of SEAC (Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chiefs of Staff Committee).

Also found on khaki background ( mine has a manufacturing error on the lettering). Also as mentioned the green/black subdued example.

Can anyone tell me where the badge is worn - shoulder or cuff, right or left arm?

There is a short article on JTAC in the latest edition of the The Bulletin of the Military Historical Society (Volume 71 No 284). An extract is below which says that “in parade orders of dress the badge is worn on the upper left arm”.

JTAC v TACP
So I remember many years back eventually locating a Tactical (not Terminal back then) Air Control Party 614 badge, who were the TACP attached to 5 Airborne Brigade. Not many TACP’s existed and even fewer wore insignia. Airborne forces require instant identification of personnel, hence their wearing of “drop zone” flashes since WW2 allowing individuals of battalions to gather together far quicker and groups with specialist roles such as engineers or Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) to be readily identifiable. I eventually found the patch and even a variation thereof.
Looking through search engines on the internet I find I have opened a can of worms on TACP, JTAC, FAC not to mention JFACTSU, and even ROMAD (?) which is currently playing out with the new “Battlefield Airman” title in the US Airforce and which may eventually confuse British collectors. I was confused when the powers that be decided that Joint Air Transport Establishment or JATE, was renamed Joint Air DeliveryTest and Evaluation Unit or the far less memorable JADTEU. Thanks to those who have thrown a little light on this exasperating subject. Ian H |

Joint Tactical Air Controller badges
The Army Dress Committee approves the wearing of the Joint Tactical Air Controller badge in perpetuity by all those qualified on all uniforms including Combat Uniform. The JTAC badge is endorsed as a Tri-Service badge to be worn by the Defence JTAC community, Royal Navy (Royal Marines), British Army (Royal Artillery, Royal Armoured Corps, Honourable Artillery Company, Army Air Corps and legacy Infantry personnel) and the Royal Air Force (Royal Air Force Regiment). Decision No: 4453 late 2019. All uniforms less Combat Dress worn on upper left arm. Combat Dress worn below Formation Flash. The approved badge for Combat Dress is a small olive green rectangle with the letters JTAC in black. Marc

Two variations of the TACP badge, 16 Air Assault Bde. I suspect these are 'unofficial', but as I understand it are worn.
