Default 2nd Lieutenant Volunteer Force World War One

Picked up this card backed photograph recently showing a Second Lieutenant wearing what appear to be General List Cap and Collar badges with a 'V' below the collars. Am I correct in thinking that he is serving with the Volunteer Force as denoted by the 'V' badges and if so would this then date the photograph to after 1916 when it is my understanding that the Volunteer Act was passed.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Regards, Simon.

Hello Simon,

Yes... it would date you pic to no earlier than 1916 when, in October of that year, the WO announced that in place of previously worn VTC collar badges, officers of the newly formed Volunteer Force, were to wear the letter 'V' on the collar.

Great photo.

Regards,

JT

JT.

Many thanks for that, I was a wee bit unsure due to the Cuff Rank tunic being worn, always thought that they were obsolete by 1916.

Regards, Simon.

Happy to be corrected but I believe rank was no longer displayed on the cuff post-1920.

A couple of sites quote this :

Quote:
During World War I, some officers took to wearing tunics with the rank badges on the shoulder, as the cuff badges made them too conspicuous to snipers. This practice was frowned on outside the trenches but was given official sanction in 1917 as an optional alternative, being made permanent in 1920, when the cuff badges were abolished.
