These came as a small collection of buttons mostly from one RVC which became part of the York and Lancaster regiment

Very interesting buttons Neil, any idea what the story behind the collection they came from is?

The details of the 4th Admin Bn (what eventually became 2nd VB Y&L) are:

4th Administrative Battalion, Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps who had their HQ in Doncaster.

18th (Pontefract) Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps
19th (Rotherham) Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps
20th (Doncaster, Great Northern Railway) Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps
21st (Doncaster Burgesses) Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps
36th (Rotherham) Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps (joined 4th AB 1862)
37th (Barnsley) Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps (transferred from 3rd AB 1863)
40th (Wath-upon-Dearne) Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps

The RVC in the 4th Administrative Battalion were consolidated as the 8th Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps in 1880 and re-designated as:

18th RVC as A Company at Pontefract
19th RVC as B & E Companies at Rotherham
20th RVC as C Company at Doncaster
21st RVC as D Company at Doncaster
37th RVC as F & H Companies at Barnsley
40th RVC as G Company at Wath-upon-Dearne
36th RVC as J Company at Rotherham

What is nice in my opinion is that the 37th RVC originates from Barnsley.

As shown above it becomes two companies of (first the 18th and in the same year 1880 renumbered as the) 8th Yorkshire West Riding RVC.

When we follow this RCV:
1908: 2nd Volunteer Battalion, The York and Lancaster Regiment
1908: 5th Battalion, The Yorks and Lancaster Regiment (TF) (and part of 5th Battalion, The King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry) (TF))

1921: 5th Battalion, The York and Lancaster Regiment (TA)
1936: 67th (The York and Lancaster Regiment) Anti-Aircraft Brigade, Royal Artillery (TA)
1938: 67th (The York and Lancaster) Anti-Aircraft Brigade, Royal Artillery (TA)
1939: 67th (The York and Lancaster) Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery (TA)
1940: 67th (The York and Lancaster) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery (TA)
1947: 467th (Mixed) Heady Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery (York and Lancaster) (TA)
1955: reduced to R (5th York and Lancaster) Battery, 271st (Sheffield) Field Regiment, Royal Artillery (TA)

Now one would think that the long ago 37th from Barnsley is already forgotten since a long time, but see what happens in
1955: this Battery is taken out of the 271st Regiment and becomes B (Barnsley) Company, The Hallamshire Battalion, The Yorks and Lancaster Regiment
So Barnsley is back!

Barnsley's volunteer soldiers are still there in the form of Burma Company 4th Bn The Yorkshire Reg. They are based at Fontenay Barracks in Barnsley (named after the Normandy battle at Fontenay le Pesnil which was a battle honour of the Hallamshires).

Nice.

I stopped at The Hallamshire Battalion, but you can trace there further down through
3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Volunteers
3rd/4th Battalion, the Yorskhire volunteers
3rd Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding) (Yorkshire Volunteers)
then probably Fontenay Company (Duke of Wellington's Regiment), The East and West Riding Regiment
and then into 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment (14th/15th, 19th and 33rd/76th Foot)

Perpertuation and lineage is intriguing, at least for me

There is one missing. After the 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Volunteers, the Barnsley Company became part of the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Volunteers which then merged with the 3rd Battalion to become the 3/4th Battalion.

It was Fontenay Company 3 DWR and when 3 DWR merged with a company of Light Infantry and 2 companies of 3 PWO, this name carried over into the East and West Riding Regt.

Paging Mr OC 14..............

In answer to post three as is usual with auctions no information on who collected it or when, just mounted on a piece of card and marked in pen, seem to remember seeing it go through three time before they had a sensible estimate and I bought it.
