Well then, apparently we have an as yet unknown variant of a Lincolnshire badge. I would guess that is a numeral 4 underneath the Sphinx.

What's odd is that Officers of the Lincolnshire Regiment didn't adopt this type of Sphinx collar until 1902. Prior to that it was an eight pointed star with a Sphinx within circlet in the center (Churchill 319, 320). When they did adopt the new pattern it had the scroll underneath. If anything this appears to be an OR's collar. As to what's underneath I can't say.

Which of the named officers is the image in post no. 1 of, are other cap badges visible as being similar?
I'm just wondering if the badge may be unique in the group to the Adjutant, who's attached from the 1st Bn? |

Lincolnshire Regt
Hello Leigh,
The names are written down the page to the left of the photograph whilst five subjects are seated on chairs with one sitting on a carpet in front. The middle seated one is wearing a Forage Cap as is the one seated on the carpet. The others all wear the Field Service Cap with the same badge. From the listing I believe that the middle seated subject is Capt. Grant, the Adjutant and he does look older than the others. I will eventually I hope be able to load the scan. MAP |
