Hi all who've contributed to this post,

I was wondering if, at some point, there was an alternative way of placing a bedplate or that there was a variation in style.

As Leigh has been kind enough to point out, Shipp was a pre-war regular so might plates from this period follow a different pattern?

It would also be nice if someone could contribute a photo, medals or plaque for Shipp as it seems rather sad that all that is left is a piece of brass....

Could it have been used like a button stick? Regards, Paul.

Hi Paul

Yes, that thought did cross my mind.

I’m pretty sure that’s where it comes from too Leigh. It’s been used by the War Office/MOD going back many centuries and cast is just an abbreviation of the fuller cast off. A cast horse and cast jeep/Land Rover meant the same thing, no longer fit for use/purpose.

Leigh and Toby,

Thanks, 'cast off' it is.
