Dating exact is tricky as you have the authority for the s/p for the badges which may or may not match up with the year that the hat changed and even then there may have been crossover not only with obsolete badges being worn on 'new' hats but also a supply issue between battalions especially when they are overseas. Add different ranks, militia, VB battalions into the mix and it does make dating a change impossible to narrow to a single year.
Well said.

Similar to the SLI thread I agree much comes down headdress.

I suspect the khaki SD cap was not quickly adopted nor was the 1905 reduced size, additional honours cap badge after sealing.

Part of my rationale for this suggestion is I’ve never encountered any 1905 pattern badge on a ‘long slider’ which should conceivably exist as the standard ‘short slider’ was not sealed until March 1906. Also like the example below I’ve seen several of the large Edwardian 1904 patterns on shortened sliders which do not look like DIY jobs or a squaddies attempts with some cutters.

The dates authorised are below:

2325A/1898 on 13/09/1898
4091/1894 on 11/09/1984
4091B/1902 on 28/05/1902
4091C/1904 on 13/07/1904
4091D/1905 on 21/09/1905
10192/1927 on 26/08/1927

Back to the badge in question in post #1…

Its size and honours configuration suggests a fit between 4091C (13/07/04) and 4091D (21/09/05). Barely 14 months however seems a very small gap to consider another pattern.

Whilst the badge is on loops it is not silvered or a higher finish to indicate SNCOs.
