The design appears to be taken from an Officer's badge but it's a fake as stated.

As Alan says, there is a gilt officers badge with such voids but it’s from a different die and of great quality unlike the fakes. I have a picture somewhere I’m sure if anyone was interested.

Mark’s badge is a fine example of a genuine EviiiR other ranks badge.
