Default Catalogue help - Liverpool Pals

Hi all,

I have ben scouring the forum to correctly identify 3 pals badges I have. This is what I have come up with, but would appreciate the experts help. (KLR, that's your cue. Most of the info I have, has come from your helpful posts in the past!)

1) Die-cast 1st Pattern with lugs - 8520/1915
2) Die-struck 1st Pattern with lugs - 8520/1915 - probably circa 1916?
3) Die-struck 2nd Pattern with slider - 9483/1917

Many thanks, Tim

Hi Tim – sorry for the delay, I've been out all day.

There is a gap in the RACD records between May 1915 and March 1916, so the sealing of the first pattern, 8520/1915, must be within the last seven months of 1915. It is however, specified as “bronzed” which in army parlance means dark brown colour (or occasionally black).

I have always assumed that the die struck version was a 'simplification' of the original type (and cheaper to produce). There is a nagging doubt that they may be officer's collar badges but I really don't believe that their quality is good enough for that.

The second pattern, 9483/1917 – specified as “bronzed” [die cast] with a slider, was sealed on 23rd May 1917. This badge was declared obsolete on 10th August 1921 following disbandment of the ‘Pals’.

I hope this helps
J

Thanks Julian, much appreciate the info. It makes sense that officers would not wear bronzed brass, so your collars theory is very logical.

Given the badges I posted don't have much/any bronze colour, I assume whatever the bronze process was, it was not robust?

Much appreciate the reply

cheers, Tim
