The Regimental badge and motto of the 17th Ruahine Regiment was officially approved by General Godley on the 14th July 1914, just 21 days before Great Britain declared war on Germany.
The following is the original badge design that was approved by General Godley.

Photographic evidence of the Ruahine Company prior to their embarkation with NZEF Main Body shows no badges had been issued.
The following letter from a member of the NZ Veterinary Corps suggests the first badges supplied to the 17th Ruahine were ordered (From J. R. Gaunt) and paid for by the Sultan Hussein Kamel of Egypt (19 December 1914 to 9 October 1917).

This would help explain the unique existence of the large sun helmet badge that was only worn by the 17th Ruahine Regiment.

The 17th sun helmet badge is often misidentified by a certain colourful curio dealer as being a volunteer helmet plate, the following picture of Private William Peter Hansen, Service number 10/383, proves the helmet plate is not from the Volunteer period.

Hi Brent

When was the 17th Ruahine Rgt formed? If it was formed before Godley's reforms in 1911, which badge did it wear?

Thanks

John

The 17th Ruahine Regiment was formed on the 27th March 1914 primarily from the 2nd Battalion of the 9th Wellington East Coast Regiment.
The Ruahine Regiment was reformed on the 12th August 1941 and saw service as part of the 3rd NZ Division in the Pacific, and it is thought by some historians to have initially worn their regimental badge due to a lack of onward badges when they embarked.

simple brass badge (collars same) maybe USD20 - not rare in NZ

however diecast bronze versions - like hens teeth..........USD100 and more if you find one

large brass sun helmet badge - say USD150

die cast bronze sun helmet..............I have one and only seen one other - maybe USD 250 - but I would buy at and over that level
