Default SAS Bimetal

Does anybody know anything about this? Its appears to be a silver and gilt 2 piece SAS badge it has slightly longer lugs than a Beret badge would have, I bought it about 10 years back and put it in a box and forgot about it, I turned it up a day or 2 ago when I dug it out the silver parts were black so I cleaned the front of the Dagger with a little Duraglit silver polish and a cotton wool bud and left the back the guilt parts I just rubbed it over with a yellow duster. Its qite heavy and held together with 3 rivets. All in all its a nice peice.

Possibly an officers collar badge: Catalogue number CB 1857, pattern number 15928, sealed 12th June 1953, added to the vocabulary 12th July 1954, introduction into service published by List of Changes C 6127 August 1954.

Hi Marc
I don’t think it’s a collar dog as its too big exactly the same size as an Ano badge that I have but an OR’s collar is smaller also the lugs ate about 1.5cm long I would have thought too long for a collar.
The above poto is L to R OR’s Ano cap, OR’s Ano Collar and Bi metal Officers?

There was an OR's and Officer's metal version cap badge made in 1953, but I do not have the details for the Officer's version.

I would also say an Officers SD Cap Badge due to the long lugs common to officers badges.

Hi Mike
Is it possible that it is the badge on the cap worn by the officer in the centre of this picture? According to osprey the silver and gilt badge for the dress blue cap was produced for 21SAS for the Queen’s coronation.

Default Offr Patt SAS

Loski,
Your construction indicates an Officer Pattern silver plate and gilt. Depending on size cap or collar. Your gilt has worn to make it look bi-metal.
Best regards,
Matt

Hi Matt
Sorry about the dodgy photos I will try and take some better ones tomorrow,
But going on the size of it it is a cap badge and looking at the photos you posted it is the same as the cap badge on the left, the gilt on the wings of mine looks worn allowing the silver beneath to show trough. I'm still glad that I mislaid it way back as its rather a nice piece.

21 SAS wore these caps throughout the 1950s and 60s. There was no special 'Coronation' badges as these are the standard No 1dress hats. Not sure why Osprey made such a statement. If you ever go the Joint Staff College there are a couple pictures of the 21 SAS HQ events which were commissioned by the regt at that time which show the Blues uniforms and peaked caps in use.

Re Post #6, Yes I do.

Add to the fact that it was standard dress for 21 SAS Officers as pointed out by Alan O, the SAS Coloured piping on No1 Dress and No1 Service Cap was the same colour as that for the Royal Army Education Corps, "Pompadour Blue" and as such only the colour needed ordering so was not really a 'special order' at all, as I am sure service hatters held them in stock for the RAEC, only the badge & buttons needed to be specified.

I would also like to see a picture of the Gilt cap buttons on a cap as well, they must exist.
