1. 3 part scroll

2. 1 part scroll

3. 2 part scroll - ZUID

4. 2 part scroll - SUID

Can someone give me definative dates of wear please as in my notes I have differing and conflicting dates.

Morning Simon,

The history of the South African Field Artillery during the Great War by Adler, Lorch, and Curson shows No 1 as the badge worn by that unit between 1915 and 1919.

I can't comment on the other three because my sources in that regard would be the same as you already have, i.e., Cox and Owen.

Keith

Hi Simon,
Firstly I believe this subject has bee discussed previously but lets go over it again.

1. This was the badge worn during WWI by the SAFA formed as part of the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force and worn only in German East Africa and Palestine - so 1916-1919

2. This was the first pattern of South African Artillery badge and from photographs I have only seen it worn by members of the South African Mounted Rifles (Artillery) during 1920-21/22

3. This was the second pattern Artillery badge initially worn by members of the SA Permanent Garrison Artillery and later South African Field Artillery from c.1923

4. This was the 3rd pattern with change from ZUID to SUID and also worn by SAPGA and SAFA. As to actual date adopted, this is speculative, anywhere from 1925 (adoption of Afrikaans as an official language in SA) but could be later based on when stocks of the second pattern badge (no.3) were exhausted. The badge was also worn by the South African Artillery from 1934 to 1959 when a new pattern of badge was adopted.

Yes, thanks Milmed, nice to have a better idea of dates, I've always found Owen a bit confusing in that regard.

It has been discussed on the forum previously but I couldn't find it on a quick search.

Cheers, Keith
