Market find!
I thought I would put these on the thread for those of a Naval persuasion to view.
I found them on a market stall in Totnes a few years ago in an old sandwich bag with only one of the epaulettes showing. Imagine my surprise when I found the service record, photographs and letter Sad that this mans career should end up on a stall in a flea market. |

Totnes Market
Third Tankie, was this the Friday market at Totnes?
If I am in the area I always try to attend, a guy called Rick Broad who used to sell up in the room above had lots of good badges, I think he lives abroad now. Rob |

Amazing find, thanks for showing them. Now to throw a spanner in the works. I would assume that the CPO badge is for Edgar St John, lovely badge and it appears to me that he was commissioned as a Warrant Officer, hence the shoulder straps. He would therefore not have been a Midshipman so I wonder if the portrait photo is of his son or another family member. Usually Middies were commissioned to Sub-Lts.

Rob,
Yes the Friday antiques market, and yes I remember Ricks stall upstairs. This Navy group however was on a stall in the main market, an older trader from Dartmouth. The story he told was that the family just wanted to sell them so I didn`t haggle on the asking price as I did think that it was sad that this proud young officers career had ended up in a sandwich bag amongst a lot of old "Tat". Alex,
You have mirrored my thoughts as the single photo looks to be quite modern compared to the group photo. So yes probably an incomplete family collection. Kevin |

Some of my very best finds have come from market stalls as house clearance people use them as as outlet. They are nearly always worth attending.

Didn't even know there was an antiques market in Totnes (bonkers place with its own monetary system - nicely summed up by the graffiti on the Welcome to Totnes sign to which someone has added "Twinned With Narnia"). Is that still going (well at least up to lockdown)

I haven't been to Totnes for many years but there was a general antique collector's street/covered market on the day that we visited. I imagine that it was a regular event.
