Default 1st Pattern Austalian Rising Sun Collar badge

Hi Guys,
Opinions wanted on this collar badge, it came in a collection of Boer War and Victorian badges.
It is voided between the letters of the name "Australia" is this an unusual pattern as I have not seen one before.
Apologies for the poor quality photos
Regards
Colin

Colin,

I agree with BC. It looks good, and matches Cossum RS4A on page 4 of his Rising Sun badge book.

G'day ukbrits,

Certainly a lovely badge! I could look at that all day!

I would point out, though, that it is a second pattern Rising Sun collar badge, not a first pattern as per your thread heading.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your opinions. Looks like I will have to track down a Cossum book in future!
Once again thanks to all

Hi Colin
Jeff Cossums books are now very expensive to buy and out of date. It’s by far the best reference books on Aussie badges.
He is due to publish a new book in 2000 on pre federation items and as you can see it’s overdue by a few years.
Once this book is published he plans on doing a reprint of the original books.
Best thing to do is keep asking on this site. I’m sure all are happy to help and give opinions

A typing error I expect. "Out of print" certainly, but not "out of date" by a long shot, in my opinion.

no typo
jeff acknowledges there are many little mistakes and he has always regretted the pricing guide, which is certainly out of date. I would be happy with those prices now

You are right, of course, BC. The price guides that he gives in a couple of the books are certainly now out of date. I try not to look at them as they bring on nostalgia for how things used to be. However I do still often find them useful for comparative purposes in trying to establish how the author may have perceived the relative rarity of the badges.

its my understanding that Jeff had no real say with the prices in the book. he didn't want them, but a certain dealer who is no longer operating, who assisted in funding the publications, insisted on the prices. purely a business/financial decision.
if he republishes, he will leave out the pricing guide and probably the scarcity rating

Definitely stuff left out of some of the Cossum books. I sold mine because the info I wanted was limited in one book in particular.

So that is what happened. I remember at the time, the prices seemed high. I was picking up old militia badges for a lot less than the price quoted in the book, then within a couple of years the prices went up substantially.

I remember getting a two piece Victorian Scottish glengarry badge (1900 -1912) for $12 not long after his Part 2 1900-1930 came out with a price of $130 on it (No 11 page 9). I was stunned at the difference - either I got bargain or the dealer was inflating the prices.

hi chris
from memory the dealer was Ray Tancred.
I remember Ray was one of the biggest dealers in Australia and I think I.S. Wrights ended up buying him out.
