1916 Loyal Suffolk Hussars

A new arrival that may be of interest for the Yeomanry or WW1 economy issue aficionados of the forum.

According to the 1916 tenders 3,000 were ordered. I suspect it was likely a very short-lived badge as in early 1917 the Loyal Suffolk Hussars were dismounted and became Battalions of the Suffolk Regiment.

Due to the excellent detail ,striking ,slider and the solder used to attach it ,Would be surprised if anybody would mistake this for a poor repro of a bi/m badge, but having seen some of the enquiries regarding if items are original I would not be surprised

Yes indeed in isolation but in a group one might overlook it at first glance.

Thanks gents. It is a very nice badge. The volume of repros including brass ones on eBay does make it easy to overlook so Dean makes a valid point. But as you say David on closer inspection it does stand out from the crowd for the reasons you mention.

The large 1950s GM badge I’ve seen from the SP card actually has no reverse impression on the scroll. Whereas the small GM one is very crisp in its reverse detail. Both have large font Gaunt London marks.

Yes it was indeed in a job lot and very much a rose amongst thorns at a recent provincial sale.

According to the 1916 tenders this leaves just a supposed Pembroke Yeomanry in all GM as the sole gap in my economy Yeomanry collection.

Whether that order was cancelled or scrapped en masse is debatable as I have never seen or heard of such a (genuine) badge. However, I said the same re the Glamorgan Yeomanry until finding one recently.

I already have in my collection the aforementioned Glam Yeo, Worcestershire Hussars, East Riding of Yorkshire Yeomanry ‘Forrard’ pattern and a Yorkshire Hussars in 1916 all GM.
