Honourable Artillery Company Light Cavalry badge

I wasn't sure which section of the forum was appropriate for this badge, however:

Can anybody let me know where/how, exactly, this badge was worn, please?

Hi Phil,

I believe this was worn on the pouch belt. It may have been worn on the harness too.

Hi Phil,

Perhaps my post might be of use after all.

My first shot at it: A brass boss from the horse harness of the Light Cavalry of the HAC from sometime between when it was raised in April 1861 to when it converted to a battery of Horse Artillery in 1890.

Not a lot of use as I have no idea where on the harness it would have featured, but perhaps some cavalry gentlemen on the forum can add that.

My last knowledge of the HAC Light Cavalry dates from 2005, when it was operating as a social activity of the HAC, but I do not know when it was formed for this purpose, and believe I read somewhere it now has an official function within the regiment, which raises the question as to whether or not it has adopted some of the old badges for parade purposes, perhaps making your badge rather more recent than I first suggested.

Nothing very definite in all this, which is why I withdrew it, but perhaps it will provide a starting point for somebody to improve on, and in the meantime I will scratch round to see if I can come up with something more positive.

Clay was right about it being a pouch badge.

Following is the text of an email I have just received from the ever helpful Curator of the HAC Museum.

'Depending on the size, this badge is either a pouch badge or a sabretache badge for the Light Cavalry. Exactly the same design as worn 1860-1890.

The pouch badge should measure 7 cms and the sabretache badge is 10.7cm.

The Light Cavalry today holds a Royal Warrant but is entirely a ceremonial unit, whose main purpose is to provide an escort for the Lady Mayoress of the City of London.

They are also available for hire to any organisation requiring some sort of 'exotic' guard of honour or similar.

The Light Cavalry provides both mounted and dismounted units'

From the look of it Phil, I rather suspect your badge is a modern copy for use with the present day Light Cavalry of the HAC and sadly, not an original 19th century one, but still a nice badge to have.
