Scots Greys
Hi Michael ,
You are right 1902/03 was the first sealed pattern cap badge of the Scots greys . This was a Gaunt strike narrow wings as in the pic, Later strike with the wings much larger 1936. 3748 Hussar |

Does really nobody knows when Dowler Birmingham did produce the cap badge of the Greys?

Gentlemen,
here are the photos of the bearskin QVC plume socket. What do you think about it? Is it genuine? The back relief is good, it's just a consequence of the oxidation. regards, Michael

Large Royal Scots Greys badge
Hello Cavalry buffs,
I would be grateful for identification of this badge. It seems rather large for an armbadge, measures 69mm high by 56mm wide. There is only the one lug remaining of the original four. Thanks, Tinto |

This from p. 55-56 of Cavalry and Warrant Officers and Non Commissioned Officers' arm badges by David Linaker and Gordon Dine:
It is rumoured that whilst in India an extremely large Eagle was worn as an arm badge. This is mentioned by J. Allison in letters to B.W. Cox. In 1935 Allison had ordered a GREYS arm badge from Shirley Brooks of Woolwich and to his surprise was supplied with a very large badge (for which he was charged 7s 6d [37.5p]). He wrote for another but this time was supplied with a normal sized arm badge. Later in the now defunct Edinburgh GREYS Club he found a photograph (The photograph was in an album which Allison said members were destroying by tearing out pages to light their pipes during the 2nd World War. It must have been destroyed as there are no Sgts' Mess Albums covering this period in the SCOTS DG Archives) of a Sgt wearing this large Eagle badge in India. No other sightings of this badge in wear have been noted and there must be doubt on its reguar use as an arm badge. It is about 40% larger than the standard arm badge and very much heavier. If worn regularly on the arm its size and weight would be a serious impediment. Furthermore its weight would damage the cloth, especially in khaki drill. It is possible that it was a pouch badge and being worn as a joke perhaps at the expense of some ambitious or newly promoted Sgt? Badge shown in 11.6 on p. 56 is large die struck white metal Eagle seen being worn in a photograph in India but doubted to have been the correct or official badge. 63.7mm high, 54.5mm wide, four securing loops EW/NS. The normal badge is described as 49.1mm high, 40.7mm wide, three loops upper two 24mm. Hope this helps. Rgds, fougasse1940. |

Hello fougassee1940,
Thank you very much for providing the detailed explanation of the badge worn in India. Mine is slightly larger than that described, and it is brass. It has some wear on the eagle's chest and I did think it might have been a pouch, sabretache, or horse harness badge. Is my badge the same pattern as the one in the photo? Cheers, Tinto |

I have one of those too, and I have shown it before but no positive id.
Victorian pouch badge is my best guess. If you happen to have a copy of "Into the Valley of Death, the British Cavalry Division at Balaclava" by John and Boris Mollo; have a look at the sketches on page 119. One thing you don't get from the photo is that this is quite a heavy lump of a badge, struck out of fairly thick plate. (fixings broken and replaced on mine as well)

Hi Cherrypicker,
The plume holder looks OK to me, good workmanship and the oxidisation is, I think, normal, the Royal Scots Greys, is a tad expensive but I'm not an authority and the last item would have me wondering, I'm sure this seller was mentioned very recently in another thread, I contributed but I can't remember the thread itself, I think I said I would not use this seller....... I hope this rather disjointed reply helps ?? Dave. |
