Alan,
It appears to be a photographers prop just like the belt. The "cap Badge" is a marksmans crossed rifles arm badge with a wreath from a LG or MG type arm badge superimposed on it. The belt mimics a 1914 pattern leather belt but is fabric and even appears a little elasticated. regards

The other thing wrong with it is the fact he is wearing a Regular army tunic. The VTC (and associated cadets) did wear these but not until 1917 when the wearer was supposedly in France and later KIA. In 1915 they were wearing VTC pattern uniforms which were specifically not of the Regular Army pattern or colour.
As for the puttees - they are a mess! I know that VTC liked to have their photos taken in their new VTC uniforms but I can't say I have seen one in a complete set of photographer's prop clothes before! |

Probably another prop available to lads like this who had signed up but not yet been issued a uniform.
Quite interesting really. regards

I suppose it may have been a lucrative sideline for the photographers.
