Default Border Regt

This beautiful little Border Regt collar arrived today. My questions are was it also used as a FSC badge, what dates did it run from and to and does L&CO stand for Lambourne, Ludsky or Ludlow? All answers appreciated. Many thanks. Denis

A very fine example. I don't think this was worn on the FSC, but I am really not sure. The mark is probably for Ludlow, which was originally Ludsky. I believe Lambourne only made OR badges.

This is a nice badge and an interesting one to me. It looks like a one piece badge, so I am wondering what the two clips coming through the center hole are for? Also, how did they get the red felt in there - really a two piece badge?

Just curious. Thanks,

Terry

Default BORDER REGT

Hi Terry,
The centre is a red and white enamelled disc held by the wires at the back, not felt. It is obviously an officers but I wonder what dates?

The design was worn 1895 -1959, but the arrangement of the Battle Honours changed from 1906.
The "P" for played marking indicates it's a layer manufactured badge (did silver plated badges start around 1947?).

Hi Leigh,
It is not plated, it has sterling and makers mark L&CO on the back - no P for plate. Denis

Ah, sorry, my mistake - I was going from memory and clearly thinking of another image I'd just viewed.
"Churchill" mentions the original badges being described as having a silver and red enamelled centre, his illustration of the later post 1906 badge shows what appears to show the centre as white and red enamelled. He says that the Battle Honours shown on the badges changed in 1906 - but I don't know what the changes were.

Yes, that's ringing bells.
I'd forgotten about the addition of ,"Ladysmith".

Hi CB
I think Lambourne did in fact make officers badges as I have an HMS 1916 one in my collection. However, I think you are probably correct in thinking this is more likely Ludski or Ludlow - do you know the date the name changed? I think it was about 1914/15 as Ludski sounded German!

This for reference. I am quite sure your badge is from this company and not Lambourne. Ludski were Polish Jews.

Interesting article CB, thanks for pointing it out. I have a number of LUDLOW STERLING badges but this is the only one with just L&CO. Denis
