Default Badged New Zealand Boer War Uniform .

Took me a year to pay this piece of kit
off , but a year of pain was worth it . Jacket and pantaloons attributed to Robert Lawrence of the 7th contingent , Boer war 1899-1902. A few pieces I had already including the forage cap attributed to Alfred Story 9th contingent bandolier with service
number of David Smaillie 5th and 7th .

All other item stamped NZ broad arrow .

Thumbs up

Hi Iain

What a fantastic collection, thanks for sharing. Do you know how many Kiwis went to the Boer War ?

I know that anything like this from Aussie is almost impossible to obtain.

Regards

Phil.

Thanks Phil .6507 New Zealanders served in South Africa . I have been told there are only 5 New Zealand Boer War uniforms out there in collections or museums but I cannot verify that .

Hi Puk, as you know I am a big fan of NZ Boer war period uniforms, head-dress, and badges, so it is great to see your named khaki drill patrol jacket, and its buttons which make it particularly interesting.

If you scroll down to the “SEVENTH CONTINGENT” post in the following link, you will see a close match to your jacket being worn by Louis Klee (No. 26 Company) 7th Contingent.

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/mili...ent-t1650.html

The following pictures, which I have recently rediscovered, were taken a few years ago while visiting the Auckland museum.
They show another 7th contingent uniform which previously belonged to Arthur Christian McFarlane;, 21 Company.

The superb helmet badge says “7th FIGHTING” on top of a kiwi standing between to ferns above the word “NEW ZEALAND.”

And the man himself arises from the mist , Robert Lawrence SA 4543, from Dunedin.

An underestimated era of New Zealand Military history.

As the photo of the Klee brothers shows, anything is possible when it comes to NZ uniforms worn at the end of the war.

Here is a picture of khaki serge tunic that was worn in South Africa by Joseph Cooke, 3rd Contingent.

This tunic was once owned by Lieut Col T C Wallace, who also use to own a khaki drill tunic with imperial buttons and riding trousers that were also worn in South Africa, unfortunately the letter I have from Wallace does not mention who the original owner was.

Another picture of Joseph Cooke's tunic.
It was made by J.Ballantyne & Co. of Christchurch, Canterbury.
