This is one of the badges worn by the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service (R.N.X.S.) prior to it's being disbanded in, I think, 1994. The letter 'A' was worn beneath the rectangular 'RN Auxiliary Service' shoulder title and signified 'afloat duties'.
