Thanks Mike, it looks like at least two are RAMC wearing the 5 Medical Regiment TRF - so not a Brigade! See earlier posts in this thread.

I was just about to post that ! It seems that none of the sellers of the badge bothered to check and they are still listed as Brigade .

If it is a TRF it is on the wrong sleeve, TRFs go on the right sleeve. The RAMC and QARANC TRFs are being worn on the right sleeve in the BBC clips.

The Army ORBAT only has a 5 Armoured Medical Regiment, which has a different Regimental Logo not a sleeve badge. Maybe they have changed their title and no one has updated the internet.

Interesting though as it is defiantly being worn, and I can now reveal that I have seen the subdued woven one on a blanking patch.

Did a bit of digging :

Initially formed from 5 Field Ambulance.

On 1 April 2009 the Regiment was renamed 5 Medical Regiment, following the restructuring of the RAMC under the Improved Medical Support to Brigades policy, and moved to Gaza Barracks, Catterick Garrison. At this time the Regiment added the White Rose of Yorkshire to its Regimental badge.

On 13 August 2014, 5 Medical Regiment celebrated its Centenary and on 1 September 2014 the Regiment was renamed 5 Armoured Medical Regiment.

The male soldier wearing the badge describes himself as a "corps medical technician" , so could the badge simply be a trade/qualification one ?

Could they have possibly introduced some new training/qualification since the outbreak of Covid for those who may have to cover Nightingale Hospitals etc , and that is why the badge has recently started to appear ?

All extremely interesting, and love seeing another picture of it being worn.

One thought, if it was a qualification badge wouldn't it be worn lower down on the right sleeve?

What badge is typically worn on the left shoulder - the unit badge? I am only familiar with the ISAF badge being worn there, and felt that was an organization badge which encompassed other units like QAs, or RAMC or RAF, etc.

I was trying to see what i could find with a few quick searches and ran across this in a listing for the badge at Drop Zone Supplies.

"5 Medical Brigade TRF Season : Current Brand : Official Issue Code : TRF165-MED5 Medical Brigade TRF worn on left upper arm."

Not sure what their source is? But it does say to be worn on the upper left arm, and they show the badge for 2.50£ if anybody wants one. Listed under Brigade Badges.

The TRF (Tactical Recognition Flash) is to show the Regiment The Rifles), or Corps Royal Army Medical Corps) that the wearer belongs too and is worn on the right sleeve.

The Formation Badge (now a Formation Flash) shows the Command Formation (Division, and Brigade etc., the wearers Unit is part of, and is worn on the left sleeve below the Union Flag.

So the badge we are talking about should be a Brigade size or Higher.

Of course with all things British Army this is not always adhered to. And there are supplier's, dealers and collectors who now call any Military cloth sleeve badge a TRF.

There are photos of 3rd Armoured Medical Regiment and they are wearing the flash of 102 Logistic Brigade on the left sleeve below the Union Flag .

As 5th Armoured Medical Regiment are part of 101 Logistic Brigade you would expect them to wear their flash.

I was told by a member of a reserve medical unit that the reserves wore the 102 patch on their right sleeve, and the regulars wore the 101 patch on their right sleeve.

He also kindly sent me three patches which I have framed with the note.

Also, this eBay listing shows the subdued version of the 5 medical??? patch.

Went on the 5 Armoured Medical Regiment Facebook page and asked :

Is the arm badge the unit insignia and when was it introduced ?

Just got a reply :

Quote:
5 Med Regt, along with 1 & 4 Med Regt, are part of the 29 Pre-Hospital Group which was formed early last year.

We now have 5 Medical Brigade and 29 Pre Hospital Group that are not listed in the MoD ORBAT or the Defence Medical Services.

However 29 PH Med Group does appear in the Commanders Linkedin entry and is part of 3rd (UK) Division.
