WELSH REGIMENT H/M COLLARS
Here you are for the Welsh collectors.
A trio of h/m collars "Na" a matching pair and an odd one. All Firmin & Sons with Birmingham hallmarks, matching pair 1908 and odd one 1918. Enjoy Jonathan DSC04533.JPGDSC04536.jpg DSC04537.jpgDSC04541.jpg Last edited by BROOKIES; 23-12-17 at 05:09 PM. |

Lovely. Forgive my ignorance, but what does "Na" signify?

These Collars also come with the alternative NI. NA being the earlier type. Some nice collars shown. Paul |

Paul,
The use of Na (than) is the correct and later use, not the earlier mistranslation of Neu (or) which is incorrect and Ni has never been used. Thomas, What I should have added is that this all relates to the spelling of the regimental motto in Welsh and more importantly, the misspelling of the motto. Amongst just general spelling mistakes was the use of Neu (or) in the earlier spellings which allowed a translation of “Better Death or Dishonour”, whereas it should be “Better Death than Dishonour”. Having recently picked up a single OSD collar stamped to Gaunt on the rear I revisited the collars I have and noted that I have have examples marked to Firmin, Jennens & Gaunt, in various formats and thought I’d share them for those who may be interested.
First up are the silver collars. The top 1909 hall marked collars are manufactured by F&S (Firmin), the third row are marked on the rear for J & Co (Jennens). The second row whilst unmarked are fretted out between the plumes. I have also found this on one or two OSD cap badges and think it must relate to a particular battalion. The bottom rhs is the collar badge worn by the 1st Batt’n RSM on white tropical dress c.1923. Last edited by 41st; 16-12-20 at 06:19 AM. |
